Alamitos Bay Marina rebuild start date moved

Picture and article by Alfredo Fernandez

The original start date of April 4th has been moved because the Marine Bureau has not received the State Coastal Permit or the permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, according to Mark Sandoval these permits are still weeks away.

The start was schedule to begin in basin 4, but that has also come to a possible standstill. The reason being that the funds available for that part of the project have come from a loan in the amount of $18 million from the Department of Boating and Waterways. Being that the money is from public funds, the City has been notified that it cannot be used for a Basin where a private club has preferential treatment.

The preferential treatment referred to in the notice is that the Long Beach Yacht Club has had a long standing “Right of First Refusal” as part of their lease agreement for the slips in that basing since the club house was first built in 1959 and also now part of the newly signed lease renewal. At present time this issue is being worked out between the City and the Club.

In the event that by the time the Marine Bureau receives the building permits both from the respective State and Federal Departments and the issue with Basin 4 is not resolved, the construction will start with Basin 1. Before that can happen the new long dock by the seawall adjacent to the LBYC will have to be built first as this is part of the relocation of some of the Boats now in Basin 1.

As anticipation of the start of the rebuild of Basin 4, most of the boats that were moored in that Basin were relocated to other areas of the Marina during the first 3 weeks of March. The ones still docked there were notified by the Marine Bureau that they could stay there, a couple of days before the deadline of March 20. The permitees that moved from there have been notified that they can move back to their old slip if they wish
