Alamitos Bay Marina rebuild approved by the Planning Commission

The environmental work for the Alamitos Bay Marina rebuild was approved by the Planning Commission on December the 17th.
The next step will be to have the State Coastal Commission approve the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) this is expected to happen mid 2010 and construction to begin by the 3rd quarter of 2010.

The project calls for redoing all the docks, In addition there would be work to renovate all the bathrooms, making the docks ADA compliant and repaving parking lots.

The EIR report calls for measures to deal with several issues, primarily with contaminated soil (Mercury) in Basin 1, A couple of the speakers expressed concern about that sediment and other issues in the report. One speaker, activist Larry Goodhue, said he opposed the EIR approval and project in its entirety. However, 12 of the 15 speakers to the Planning Commission recommended approval of the EIR, saying the project had been a community effort. The commissioners agreed with that majority and approved it unanimously (two commissioners were absent).

Larry Goodhue (A local activist) has appealed the EIR to the full City Council, which is expected to take up the issue in January.

The Planning Commission also approved the development permit for two land-based parts of the rebuild, things that do not have to be approved by the state Coastal Commission. That includes the bathroom rebuild and parking lot repaving near the Long Beach Yacht Club. the project is expected to cost $88 million with $22 million already in place through the California Department of Boating and Waterways as well as some funding from the city through slip fees. Plans call for the rest of the money to come from a revenue bond, paid back by money generated from slip fees.

Appeal denied by the city Council

On February 2, 2010 the appeal by Larry Goodhue (A local activist) was heard by the City Council and denied. The city council recommended proceeding with the recommendation and adopting Resolution No. RES-10-0013 with a vote of 9 in favor and none opposed
